What is WhatsApp Business API (WABA)?

The WhatsApp Business API (often called WABA) is Meta's official platform for businesses with high message volume — programmatic access to send and receive WhatsApp messages at scale, with verified business profiles and template-message capabilities.

The WhatsApp Business API (commonly abbreviated WABA) is Meta's official API platform for businesses that need programmatic access to WhatsApp — sending and receiving messages at scale, with a verified business profile, template-message capabilities, and integration support. It's separate from the consumer WhatsApp app and from the simpler WhatsApp Business app (which is for small businesses with manual messaging).

Three tiers exist for businesses on WhatsApp in 2026:

  • Personal WhatsApp — the consumer app. Not for business use; rate-limited and lacks business features.
  • WhatsApp Business app — Meta's free mobile app for small businesses. Adds a business profile, catalog, away messages, keyword autoreplies. Limited to one device, one phone number, manual messaging.
  • WhatsApp Business API (WABA) — programmatic access for businesses with higher volume. Required for AI-driven customer service, multi-agent inboxes, marketing broadcasts, and integration into a store backend. Subject to Meta's policies on template messages, opt-in, and conversation pricing.

WABA access is managed through Meta's Business Manager and typically requires:

  • A verified Facebook Business Manager account
  • A phone number not already used on the consumer WhatsApp app (or migrate from the Business app)
  • A Business Solution Provider (BSP) — Meta's licensed partner that provisions the API access — or Meta's own Cloud API
  • Compliance with Meta's commerce policy (some categories prohibited: pharmaceuticals, regulated goods, etc.)

For Pakistani SMBs, WABA verification can take 1–3 weeks depending on Meta's queue. WoBooks does not connect a business's own number to WABA yet: Brain, the customer-side AI, answers in your website chat, and your site's WhatsApp button opens a normal chat with your own number.

Common questions

Does WABA cost money?

WABA itself is fee-based — Meta charges per conversation (within categories: marketing, utility, authentication, service). Pricing varies by country and category; in Pakistan, costs are typically a few cents per business-initiated conversation. Customer-initiated conversations have different (often lower) pricing. Because WoBooks does not connect your own number to WABA yet, it does not bill you for WABA conversations.

Can I use WABA with my existing WhatsApp number?

Often yes, but with a caveat — the number must not be active on the consumer WhatsApp app at the same time. The migration is typically a one-time switch: you move the number from the WhatsApp Business app (or personal app) to WABA, after which you use a WABA-connected tool instead of the WhatsApp app on your phone for that number.
